About Borneo Dayak tattoos
Dayak tattoos are a powerful visual language of the indigenous peoples of Borneo, marking identity, protection, and life’s major transitions. Traditional motifs include the Bungai Terung (eggplant flower) representing the start of adulthood, Asu (dragon-dog) as a guardian spirit, Kenyalang (hornbill) symbolizing courage and prestige, and tree-of-life patterns that connect the wearer to ancestors. It is not taboo for outsiders to wear Borneo tattoos, but a basic understanding of the meanings if appreciated while in Borneo amongst its people.
Many designs feature bold spirals and flowing geometric lines, believed to offer spiritual armour and guidance. Traditionally applied through hand-tapping or hand-poking, Dayak tattoos serve as living records of heritage, achievements, and the wearer’s personal path.
Many Dayak tattoos are deeply tied to personal growth and the human connection to nature, community, and the spirit world. Bold designs symbolize the start of a new life chapter—growth, learning, and transformation. The tree-of-life patterns and flowing vines represent the bond between humans, ancestors, and the natural world, showing that all life is interconnected. Rattan bands symbolize resilience and the strength to continue evolving, while spirals and looping lines reflect the ongoing journey of the soul.
In many Dayak traditions, tattoos were believed to guide and protect the soul on its journey to the afterlife. Certain motifs acted as spiritual “markers” so ancestors and guardian spirits could recognize and assist the wearer after death. Designs such as the Asu (dragon-dog) and hornbill patterns were thought to offer protection against harmful spirits. Some tattoos served as spiritual currency, granting safe passage or favor in the next world. These markings weren’t just body art, they were sacred guides meant to accompany the wearer beyond life, ensuring they would be welcomed, protected, and connected to their ancestral spirits.
